History of Chess

Read along to get a good idea about how the game evolved

India: The father of mathematics!

With all important maths concepts like zero, trignometry, pi, etc invented in India, have a look at the intellect of a Brahmin mathematician named Lahur Sissa

In 3000 BCE, Brahmin Lahur showed his invention of Chess to King Ladava of South India

King became extremely happy & offered him whatever he wished

Lahur requested 1 wheat grain for 1 square of the chessboard, 2 grains for second, 4 for 3rd & so on till 64

First, the king thought its a easy demand but his ministers told him thats its impossible to get so many of grains which comes to 1 with 20 zeroes!!!

3. History of Chess in Maharashtra

Kondhana was in “enemy” hands in 1670, and Shivaji’s mother, Jijabai, invited, and then defeated Shivaji in a game of chess, and asked for the fort as “the bet”. The tradition continued even in the rule of The Peshwas, the Brahmin Marathis, who ruled entire Indian Subcontinent for more than 100 years. A pandit in court of Bajirao Peshwa, wrote a book, 'Vilas Mani Manjiri', on the opening moves in chess. Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak & Nathuram Godse were expert chess players.

In Maharashtra, the first chess Association was formed in 1921 in Sangli. From 1922 to1925,first chess Tournaments of Southern Maratha Country championship were arranged by late. Dy. Vasudeo Narayan Desai in Sangli Gymkhana. In 1955, chess clocks were not available in India. So Late Shri. Bhaurao Padsalgikar himself invented chess clocks & organized Sangli chess festivals for all his life.

4. History of Chess in India

Pioneer of Indian Chess, Mir Sultan Khan, one of the greatest legends of Indian chess with a playing strength equivalent to an Elo rating of 2530 according to Arpad Elo's calculation, WAS EASILY A GRANDMASTER, THOUGH NEVER AWARDED THE TITLE. Another assessment system, Chess metrics, calculates that his highest rating was 2699, ranked number 7 in the world, in November 1932. He was one of a few players who had a plus record against Capablanca, Frank Marshall & Savielly Tartakower. He was the strongest chessmaster of his time from Asia. Mir Sultan Khan (1905 – April 25, 1966). Sultan Khan was uneducated & was an employee (Cook) of Indian Soldier & Punjabis largest landholder Sir Umar Hayat Khan. After winning the All-India Championship in 1928 (8 wins,1 draw, no loss), he went to England & quickly came to the notice of English masters William Winter & Frederick D Yates who helped him overcome his lack of theoretical knowledge. In an international chess career of less than five years (1929-33), he won the British Championship 3 times in 4 tries (1929, 1932,1933), and had tournament & match results that placed him among the top ten players in the world in his era. He also represented Britain in 3 chess Olympiads as its leading player. He defeated Dr. Savely Tartakovar in a match of 11 games in 1931. He won against Marshall, Capablanca, Salo Flohr & Rubinstein & drew with World Champion Alexander Alekhine, Max Euwe, Ernst Grünfeld, Gideon Ståhlberg,Isaac Kashdan & Efim Bogolyubov. His highest rank was number 6 in the world, albeit with a slightly lower rating, in May 1933, behind only Alekhine, Kashdan, Flohr, Capablanca & Euwe, & ahead of such giants as Aron Nimzowitsch & Akiba Rubinstein.

Mir Sultan Khan

Sultan Khan never finished lower than fourth in any chess tournament in which he ever played. His meteoric rise was parallel to Morphy’s, who conquered the chess world in about three years. Sultan Khan rose to the top of the chess world, playing on even terms with the world's best players. MIR SULTAN KHAN MAY BE LONG FORGOTTEN IN INDIA SINCE HE WAS BORN IN PRESENT DAY PAKISTAN BUT HE WILL BE REMEMBERED AS THE BEST NATURAL PLAYER & GREATEST ENDGAME PLAYER BY THE CHESS LOVERS.

Then in 1951, Chess Association of India was started & registered in Mumbai.

World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand became Indias first Grandmaster in 1988. Heheld the FIDE World Chess Championship from 2000 to 2002. He became the undisputed World Champion in 2007 till present date.

5. History of World Chess

Chess had originated in India and from there traveled to China and also through Arab world to Europe. There are historical references that in India chess was used as a tool to teach military strategy to Indian princes. That is probably how chess acquired its nickname: the Royal Game.

The game Chaturanga probably evolved into its current form around 600 AD during the Gupta Empire in India. In the 7th century, it was adopted as Shatranj in Sassanid Persia, which in turn was the form that brought chess to late-medieval Europe. Sanskrit caturaṅga is abahuvrihi compound, meaning "having four limbs or parts" and in epic poetry often means "army". The name itself comes from a battle formation mentioned in the Indian epic Mahabharata, referring to four divisions of an army, viz. elephants, chariots, cavalry, andinfantry.Chaturanga was played on an 8x8 uncheckered board, called Ashtāpada

From India, the game spread to Persia. When the Arabs conquered Persia, chess was taken up by the Muslim world and subsequently spread to Russia & Southern Europe from Middle east. In Europe, the game evolved into its current form in the 15th century. The first modern chess tournament was held in London in 1851.

Sir Bobby Fischer

Sir Bobby Fischer is considered by many to be the greatest chess player of all time. 11th World Champion (1972–1975) Robert James Fischer (Bobby) lived, fought & died an uncompromising fighter against every injustice. He gave the cerebral game, an international prominence and political glamour. He was a national hero whose popularity rivaled that of Muhammad Ali. Sales of chess sets and books boomed, and tournament prize funds soared. With Bobby Fischer in the lead, chess was headed for the popularity of golf and tennis. His games were shown live around the world. Chess was on the cusp of becoming a commercially successful sport for the first time.
